Treating lawns with fertilizer and weed control is a more involved process and requires training, licensing and permits, as well as quite a bit of experience spanning seasonal changes. It is best that entrepreneurs interested in starting this type of business work for one of the large commercial outfits like TruGreen or Scott’s to get some good training and experience.

One positive to starting this type of lawn business is that you can begin with just a truck, a fertilizer spreader, hand can and a few bags of fertilizer.

Starting a lawn business is a difficult job, but also a simple one.

Equipment in order to start your own yard business and make money doing it. You really just need a basic lawnmower as well as yard tools. And most of the time, you will already have these items and be ready to get started. In time, you can upgrade your equipment as it will wear out eventually if you have a lot of lawns to cut.

You will also want to keep a client listing of whose lawn you did and what you did to it. This will allow you to make money by offering to provide regular trims of the grass as well as weeding. And you’ll know when they need help because you’ve kept track of their business. You can also make suggestions in this listing and bring up possible jobs that they might like you to do in terms of landscaping and other yard work.

Professional looking uniformed staff. One of the most important things you can remember is that “Image is Everything.” Think about it. If given the choice most people would choose the person in the professional looking uniform over the guy in the wife-beater t-shirt wearing a bandana and covered in tattoos. The t-shirt guy might be more skilled but he doesn’t come across as a professional and that can turn away potential clients. We’re not talking suit and tie. It can be as simple as a pair of dark work pants or short pants with a dark colored shirt that of course is clearly identified with the name of your company. The best option would be a small logo on the front ****** and large on the back of the shirt with the phone number. In addition to maintaining a professional appearance, wearing a uniform like this is also helping to advertise your business. Everyone that drives will be able to see your name on the shirts and associate that name with the beautiful property that you are working on.

There are a few different angles from which to approach lawn care as a business. The most obvious side of the industry is the actual work of maintaining the lawn itself, and there are three businesses I would recommend for their excellence in the market.

Spring-Green Lawn Care is a longtime powerhouse in the lawn care world, providing top-notch service to homeowners in 24 states for the last 30 years. Franchisees with this mobile franchise receive a week of initial training and a few days of on-the-job training before starting out as owner/operators; fertilizing clients’ lawns, controlling diseases and insects, aerating, and maintaining trees and hedges around the lawn as well. And that simple beginning can quickly turn into a more profitable operation with the franchisee overseeing a larger group of employees actually doing the work.

Clearly, the first step in determining whether or not a lawn care business is for you, is examining your enjoyment of such work. Starting a business built on financial goals rather than your love of the business is destined for failure. If you truly love to work outdoors, to bring creativity to the table, to nurture a lawn into health and vitality, then a lawn care business will bring you much more than cash. If you love what you do on a daily basis then you will never work another day in your life; because when you do what you love it doesn’t feel like work.

One thing you should know up front before beginning a lawn care business is the non-traditional hours that will be required of you. Many of your customers will require your services over the weekend; some lawn maintenance may need to be done during early morning hours – or later when the sun has set. While you may be successful enough at some point to hire employees who can help offset the workload for you, initially it may just be you. Be prepared for some long days and weeks early on in your lawn care business as you build your customer base.

But who’s got time to push or ride a lawn mower every weekend? Wouldn’t you rather spend the time doing other things? That’s where technology steps in. About eight years ago, robotic lawn mowers quietly eased their way into the household market. Today, hundreds of thousands of lawns worldwide and here in the US are being maintained by home robotic lawn mowers.

A robotic lawn mower may be one of the smartest investment purchases you can make in order to save money. This is especially so if you have a quarter acre lawn or larger. Dollar for dollar, a robotic lawn mower will not only save you time, but will cost considerably less than a lawn service or owning and maintaining riding lawn mower.

The snow has melted, get your wheelbarrow out and start picking up the debris left behind from the fall and anything the snowplows may have thrown into your lawn. You will want to get your rake out so that you get all of the twigs, branches, leaves, etc. that are in the yard.

Then get out your shovel (hopefully for the last time) and flatten out any piles that are taking longer to melt. They might be lining your sidewalk from shoveling previously or in areas that don’t get as much sun. Why? While the extra snow shouldn’t kill the grass, it might stunt the growth and that won’t make for a superb lawn.

Although this form could be construed as a legal document and might very well be legally binding, I am not a lawyer and encourage you to seek out a lawyer in contract matters.

At the acceptance of this agreement I let my customers know that neither they nor I am bound to it and that they may cancel service at any time. Likewise I am free to cancel service as well for any reason. This puts them at ease and makes them feel less obligated, and if you do a good job odds are they will not fire you. And although the contract has a start date and an end date specified, I have never had to recreate a new one for the following year. I simply continue service on a month to month basis.
